Smaller Repairs
Treating decay while it's still small can mean less drilling now and a smaller, simpler repair later, if one is ever needed.

Spotted a chalky white mark on a tooth and hoping it doesn't mean the drill? Minimally invasive cavity care in Orange, CA, can stop or repair some early cavities without drilling. We tell you honestly if it's right for your tooth and help you keep as much of it as possible.
Minimally invasive cavity care focuses on finding decay early and keeping as much of your natural tooth as possible. SDF is a liquid brushed onto a cavity to help stop it from growing. The treatment is quick, but it permanently darkens the decayed area, so we'll talk with you about whether that's acceptable for the tooth.
Curodont is used on early enamel lesions, the chalky white spots that appear before a cavity becomes a hole. It helps the enamel take minerals back in and harden again. Neither treatment repairs a deep cavity or a broken tooth, and your exam and X-rays show which option fits each tooth.
Treating decay while it's still small can mean less drilling now and a smaller, simpler repair later, if one is ever needed.
Both treatments are painted on during a short, simple visit, usually without a numbing shot or any drilling at all.
With no drill involved, these treatments are often easier for young children and for anyone who feels anxious about dental work.
These treatments usually fit into a regular checkup or a short visit of their own.
Book NowWe look closely at the spot and take an X-ray to see how far the decay has reached, since depth decides your options.
We show you whether SDF, Curodont or a filling makes the most sense for each spot and explain the reasons behind our advice.
We clean and dry the tooth, then brush or dab the liquid onto the spot, which usually takes just a few minutes for each tooth.
At your regular cleanings, we check the treated spots and compare them with earlier X-rays to make sure the decay hasn't grown.
We start with the least invasive option that will work, and if decay is too deep for SDF or Curodont, we'll recommend a filling.
We're upfront about what each treatment can and can't do, including SDF's dark stain, and you'll know the cost before anything is applied.
We also look for what's behind the decay, such as frequent snacking or dry mouth, so you can lower your risk of new cavities. For some patients, an OralDNA saliva test shows which bacteria are involved and helps guide the home-care changes that will help most.

Silver diamine fluoride can stop some early cavities without drilling, and Curodont helps early chalky white spots take minerals back in.

Yes, SDF permanently darkens the decayed area it treats, usually to dark brown or black, while the healthy enamel around it keeps its normal color. For this reason, it's most often used on back teeth or baby teeth. We'll talk through the trade-off with you before any treatment.
Curodont can help only very early cavities, the white spots that appear before a hole forms. It helps these spots take minerals back in and harden, which may let us avoid or delay a filling. Once a cavity has become a hole or reached deeper layers, a filling is still needed.
Both treatments are painted on without drilling, and most people don't need a numbing shot. We keep the tooth clean and dry for a few minutes while the liquid goes on. Some people notice a brief metallic taste after SDF, which fades quickly.
Often, yes. Drill-free care can manage early cavities in young children who are nervous or too young to sit through a filling. We'll explain the trade-offs, including the dark stain SDF leaves, so you can decide what's best for your child.
It depends on your plan, because coverage for these newer treatments varies more than it does for fillings, and some plans don't cover them at all. Our team can check how your plan handles them before anything is applied. You'll find the plans we're in network with on our Dental Insurance page.
