What is Sedation Dentistry

How Sedation Dentistry Works

Sedation dentistry uses medication to help you relax during treatment, and it's often a good fit for dental fear, a strong gag reflex or a long appointment. Depending on your needs, we can help you stay comfortable in three ways.

Local anesthesia numbs only the area being treated, so you feel some pressure but no sharp pain. It usually wears off in 2 to 4 hours.

Our comfort menu offers small comforts you can ask for at any visit, with no medication involved. For some patients, these and good numbing are all they need.

IV sedation, often called "sleep dentistry," delivers medication through a vein and is given and monitored by a dental anesthesiologist.

The Benefits of Sedation Dentistry

Eases Fear

IV sedation helps you feel deeply relaxed, so treatment you've been putting off because of fear or a bad past experience can finally get done.

Easier Procedures

Along with local numbing, IV sedation can make a long appointment feel much shorter and easier to sit through.

Fewer Appointments

In some cases, sedation lets us complete more treatment in one visit, which can mean fewer trips to the office and fewer days off work.

The Sedation Dentistry Process

A sedation visit takes a little more planning than a routine appointment, and each step helps keep you safe and relaxed.

Step 1

Consultation

We talk about your health history and what makes you nervous at the dentist, then decide together whether IV sedation is right for you.

Step 2

Pre-Sedation Instructions

You'll receive clear instructions about eating, drinking, your daily medications and arranging a driver for the day. We also review the treatment planned for your sedation visit, so you know exactly what will be done.

Step 3

IV Placement

On treatment day, the dental anesthesiologist places a small IV, usually in your arm or the back of your hand. Your breathing, heart rate and oxygen levels are monitored closely from the moment sedation begins until your treatment is finished.

Step 4

Restful Treatment

Once you're relaxed and numb, we complete your treatment while the anesthesiologist stays with you and keeps track of how you're doing.

Step 5

Recovery

You'll rest in our office until you feel steady, then go home with your driver and written aftercare instructions. Grogginess usually lasts for the rest of the day, so plan to relax at home and save work and errands for tomorrow.

Our Difference

Licensed Dental Anesthesiologist

A California-licensed dental anesthesiologist, a dentist with advanced training in anesthesia, gives and monitors your sedation. With the anesthesiologist watching over you, our dentist can give full attention to your dental treatment.

Careful Health Review

We review your medical history and medications carefully before we plan any sedation for your visit. If it isn't a safe fit for you, we'll tell you honestly and talk through other ways to keep you comfortable.

You Set the Pace

Let us know about any difficult past visits, so we can plan your appointment around what helps you feel most at ease. We check in with you throughout treatment, and you can signal for a break at any time and we'll stop right away.

Clear Costs and Risks

We explain your treatment, what sedation adds to the cost and any risks that apply to your health. You're welcome to take the plan home and think it over with your family before you decide.

Did you know…

IV sedation usually leaves you deeply relaxed and drowsy rather than fully unconscious, despite the nickname "sleep dentistry."

I can not say good things about this place. They took my fear and anxiety about the dentist and made me feel safe and comfortable. I can not say enough good things about this place.
Lisa Brown
This was my first time here at the Dental Spa of Orange, and I must say that the Dentist, Dr. Marty is the Dentist I would recommend to anyone. Rebacca, who is the receptionist, was very helpful from the moment I walked in. She was very nice and greeted me with a warm welcome, leaving me feeling very comfortable as I waited to be called in for the operation. After a very short wait, I met Dr. Marty, who was very knowledgeable and extremely caring. My procedure consisted of pulling my two bottom wisdom teeth, which was a simple, short and very easy procedure under Dr. Marty's supervision. The Doctor even called me the next day to make sure that I was okay, showing that he truly cares for his patients. Letty, the dental assistant was also very accomodating and made me feel very comfortable before the procedure took place. She asked if I would like to pick some music to listen to before I was put under. She also gave me a blanket to keep me warm. During the procedure Letty was very attentive to ensuring my experience was as comfortable as possible, also constantly kept my mouth clear from any spit. I would highly recommend anyone to ask for her as the assistant for any procedure. Overall, this whole experience went very smoothly and I would highly recommend the Dental Spa of Orange to anybody. Dr. Marty is a very trustworthy dentist, and I will be going to him for all my dental needs. Thank you guys!

The most enjoyable dentist experience I’ve ever had. My first visit here, I’ve expressed how absolutely terrified I am of going to the dentist, and the staff made it as comfortable as they possibly could. It has never changed. They remember my husband and I, Everyone there is friendly and professional, and even though I live a bit far from this location, I continue to be a patient here. Thank you dental spa of orange for smiles and hospitality.

I had an anchor installed by Dr Desai. He was able to do all the work without feeling any pain. Most of the time. I require a lot of anesthesia. But after I mentioned that he used a stronger anesthesia and it was the best visit to a dentist that I've ever had.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Check out these frequently asked questions, or call us at (714) 282-2525 to speak with our team.

Does sleep dentistry mean I'll be completely unconscious?

IV sedation usually leaves you deeply relaxed and drowsy rather than fully unconscious, despite the nickname. You keep breathing on your own, and many patients drift in and out and remember little afterward. The anesthesiologist adjusts the level of sedation as needed throughout your visit.

Is IV sedation safe?

Yes, for most healthy adults, IV sedation is safe when a trained dental anesthesiologist gives it after a careful screening. We review your health history, medications and any heart or breathing conditions ahead of time, and the anesthesiologist stays with you for the entire visit.

Can I drive myself home after IV sedation?

You'll need a responsible adult to drive you home after IV sedation and ideally stay with you for the rest of the day. The medication can slow your reflexes for several hours, so avoid driving, work and important decisions until the next day. Most people feel like themselves by the following morning.

Can I eat or drink before my appointment?

You'll usually be asked to stop eating and drinking for several hours before your visit, since an empty stomach lowers the risk of problems during sedation. We'll give you exact times, and if you take a daily medication, check with us before skipping it.

Am I a good candidate for IV sedation?

You may be a good candidate if fear has kept you from the dentist, numbing hasn't worked well for you before or it's hard to stay still through a long procedure. Some heart, lung or sleep apnea conditions and pregnancy may rule it out, so we review your health history first and suggest other options if needed.

Is IV sedation covered by dental insurance?

Sometimes. Many plans help pay for IV sedation only with certain procedures, such as some extractions or oral surgery, and consider it optional for routine care. We're in network with Delta Dental, Tricare and Connection Dental plans, and our team can check how your plan covers sedation before your visit.
